Designer Interview of Jiayu Yao:
DI: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
JY : I have always been interested in art and design since I was a child. I have always loved to draw and create things with my hands. When I was in high school, I discovered industrial design and fell in love with it. The idea of creating products that could solve real-world problems and improve people's lives fascinated me. I decided to pursue a degree in industrial design engineering at Zhejiang University to further develop my skills and knowledge in this field. Throughout my studies, I have had the opportunity to work on various design projects and gain hands-on experience in the design process. It has been an exciting and fulfilling journey so far, and I look forward to continuing to create meaningful products that can make a positive impact on people's lives.
DI: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
JY : Zhejiang University design discipline directions include innovation design theory, industrial design methods, digital creative design, intelligent product design, human-computer interaction design, etc. The discipline focuses on design in the information network era and has made leading contributions to the development planning, talent training, design practice and academic research of innovative design and digital creativity in China. The discipline aims to cultivate innovative design top talents with international vision and future-oriented, and has built a complete talent cultivation system in the field of design with degree levels and types.
DI: What is "design" for you?
JY : For me, design is all about problem-solving. It's about identifying a need or a challenge and creating a solution that is both functional and visually appealing. Good design is not just about aesthetics, it's about creating products that are user-friendly, sustainable, and have a positive impact on people's lives. Design should be thoughtful, innovative, and push the boundaries of what's possible. It's about creating products that people not only want but also need. Ultimately, design is about making the world a better place by improving people's experiences and interactions with the world around them.
