SK : I have a strong background in art and design, specifically in the field of fashion and clothing. My passion for design was ignited from a young age, and I pursued formal education in this field at the prestigious Hong Kong Polytechnic University. It was during my studies that I developed a keen interest in creating functional wearables and exploring the potential of smart textiles. Throughout my career, I have honed my skills and knowledge through hands-on experience in the industry. Additionally, I expanded my expertise by obtaining a master's degree in Global Fashion Management from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, collaborating with renowned institutions such as FIT in New York and IFM in Paris. The desire to make a difference and improve people's lives through design has always been a driving force for me. I saw the opportunity to combine my passion for fashion with innovative technologies to create products that go beyond aesthetics and offer practical solutions. DI: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
SK : KnitWarm Limited is a design studio established in 2017 with a dedicated focus on integrating newly patented thermal technology into innovative designs. Our primary goal is to enhance daily life by providing comfortable, user-friendly, and stylish on-the-go gadgets that contribute to overall well-being. At KnitWarm, we believe in the seamless fusion of sleek design and cutting-edge technology. Our designs are carefully crafted to not only deliver exceptional functionality but also evoke a sense of fashion and style. SK : Design, for us, is the art and science of creating solutions that enhance the quality of life for users. It goes beyond aesthetics and encompasses the seamless integration of design and technology to deliver meaningful and impactful experiences. Design is about understanding the needs and desires of users, and using creativity and innovation to address those needs in a harmonious way. Design is the bridge that connects functionality, usability, aesthetics, and emotional appeal. We enjoy designing wearables that provide thermal therapy to targeted areas, offering relief and comfort to individuals. DI: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
SK : My favorite design would have to be the KnitWarm WarmerBand. It stands out for its combination of functionality and aesthetic appeal. The sleek and slim profile of the band allows for a comfortable fit and easy wearing under clothing without adding bulk. The use of recycled polyester from PET bottles not only contributes to sustainability but also offers a soft and smooth texture that feels pleasant against the skin. The WarmerBand's design also takes into consideration the different areas of the body that may benefit from warmth and targeted therapy. Its versatile shape and flexibility allow it to be wrapped around the waist, neck, or shoulders, providing soothing warmth and relief to specific muscle groups. The controlled constant temperature ensures a consistent and comfortable experience for the wearer. With its thoughtful design, the KnitWarm WarmerBand combines functionality, comfort, and sustainability, making it a favorite among design enthusiasts who value both style and the positive impact of their choices.
DI: What was the first thing you designed for a company?
SK : My very first design for a company was the KnitWarm Wrap. This stylish and functional wrap was created to provide compression, support, and soothing heat therapy for joints. It features stretchable braces and incorporates a patented self-heating module that effectively relieves joint discomfort and enhances injury recovery. The inspiration behind the KnitWarm Wrap came from the observation that applying heat therapy to certain joints, such as the wrist, can be challenging at home. Even in some physiotherapy clinics, traditional heating agents are not always comfortable or convenient to use. With the KnitWarm Wrap, I aimed to address these issues and provide a user-friendly, portable, and sustainable solution for daily wear. I am proud to say that the KnitWarm Wrap received recognition for its design excellence and was awarded the prestigious red dot award. This early success fueled my passion for designing functional wearables that integrate technology and fashion to enhance the well-being and comfort of individuals.
DI: What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
SK : KnitWarm is a game-changing fabric-based thermal innovation that has captured my fascination as a designer. It seamlessly merges the inherent qualities of fabric, such as softness, stretchability, and breathability, with cutting-edge heating technology. This unique combination empowers me to craft functional wearables that not only offer unparalleled comfort but also provide much-needed warmth. The beauty of KnitWarm lies in its ability to integrate heating elements directly into textiles, eliminating the need for bulky and cumbersome heating devices. This revolutionary material grants me the freedom to create designs that are sleek, lightweight, and incredibly user-friendly. SK : I feel most creative when my mind is refreshed and rejuvenated. This often happens after a good rest, especially in the morning when I wake up feeling energized and ready to tackle the day ahead. The peaceful moments of sleep, aided by my KnitWarm EyeMask, contribute to a sense of calmness and tranquility. The KnitWarm EyeMask, crafted with a single layer of fabric that gently warms the delicate eye area, creates a soothing and comforting sensation. It helps to block out any unwanted light and provides a cocoon-like environment for relaxation. This enhances my overall sleep quality and promotes a restful state of mind. After a rejuvenating sleep, I find that my mind is clear, my thoughts are focused, and my creativity flows effortlessly. I am able to approach my design work with a fresh perspective, bringing innovative ideas and unique solutions to the table. The combination of a good night's sleep and the gentle warmth of the KnitWarm EyeMask creates the perfect environment for creativity to flourish. SK : When designing, my primary focus is always on the user. I aim to make the design intuitive and easy to use, ensuring that individuals can seamlessly interact with the product without any confusion or frustration. The concept of generating comforting warmth through innovative design fills me with a sense of fulfillment and purpose. It brings me joy to know that my designs have the potential to positively impact people's lives by providing them with warmth and comfort. There is a sense of empathy and connection that arises during the design process. I try to put myself in the shoes of the user, imagining how they will feel when they interact with the product. I consider their needs, desires, and the emotions they might experience while using the design. This empathetic approach allows me to create designs that resonate with users on an emotional level. There is a unique sense of validation that comes with seeing people engage with and appreciate my designs. DI: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
SK : When evaluating a design, the user experience and user journey are of utmost importance. While advanced technology can offer innovative features, it should be seamlessly integrated into the design and not overshadow the overall aesthetics and usability. By placing the user at the center of the design process and considering their needs and preferences, we can create designs that are truly impactful and successful.
DI: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
SK : I agree that designers have a responsibility towards society and the environment. Firstly, it is crucial to prioritize the longevity and durability of designs. By creating products that are built to last, we can reduce waste and encourage a more sustainable approach to consumption. Additionally, designers should strive to create products that serve a purpose and have a positive impact on people's lives. In the case of KnitWarm products, the portable thermal solutions not only provide warmth but also improve users' moods, allowing them to engage more actively in their communities. By designing with a focus on both functionality and emotional well-being, designers can contribute to the overall betterment of society. Lastly, considering the environmental impact of materials and production processes is vital. DI: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
SK : The field of design is evolving rapidly and becoming more interdisciplinary. It is no longer limited to traditional categories like fashion or product design. Designs, like our KnitWarm products, encompass elements from various disciplines. For instance, the scarf combines fashion design with the integration of KnitWarm technology, which adds a technological aspect to the product. Additionally, the inclusion of features like fabric cable switches and mobile app interfaces involves aspects of product design and user experience design. The boundaries between different design categories are becoming more blurred as designers explore new possibilities and incorporate different disciplines into their work. The future of design lies in this interdisciplinary approach, where designers can create innovative solutions that seamlessly blend aesthetics, functionality, and technology to improve the lives of users. DI: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?
SK : Our last exhibition was held in May at the Hong Kong Central Market, a historic building that was transformed into a versatile venue in the heart of the city. The exhibition aimed to educate the public about the benefits of targeted thermal therapy for the body, going beyond simply keeping warm in cold weather. While I haven't planned for another solo exhibition at the moment, I am actively seeking opportunities for joint ventures and collaborations. In fact, next month I will be participating in an exciting stools exhibition where I will apply textile techniques to create practical yet intriguing exhibits on the stools. DI: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
SK : The design inspiration for my works primarily comes from communication and understanding people's needs. I enjoy engaging with different individuals and studying their lifestyles to create designs that cater to their specific requirements. Professional advice and input are also valuable sources of inspiration. For example, the idea for our latest product, "WarmerShoulder," was sparked by conversations with physiotherapists who highlighted the challenges of applying heat therapy to the shoulder area. Taking their feedback into consideration, we developed the ultra-slim WarmerShoulder, a three-dimensional knitted fabric piece that covers the shoulders entirely. This innovative design not only provides a soft and cozy sensation but also enhances blood circulation and reduces discomfort caused by fatigue and muscle tension. Unlike traditional clothing that requires multiple fabric pieces, WarmerShoulder's seamless one-piece construction weighing only 88 grams ensures optimal comfort and unrestricted movement during heat therapy, allowing users to carry on with their daily activities without hindrance. By actively listening to professionals and understanding the needs of individuals, we can create designs that truly address their pain points and improve their overall well-being. This approach of combining practical feedback with innovative design thinking fuels my creativity and enables me to develop solutions that make a meaningful impact in people's lives.
DI: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
SK : I would describe my design style as innovative and functional, with a touch of playfulness. The exploration of this style was driven by the desire to create designs that not only serve a practical purpose but also evoke a positive emotional response from the user. KnitWarm products, crafted using advanced 3D knitting techniques, allow me to experiment with intricate jacquard patterns. While the patterns may not be as precise as printed designs, they have a unique charm and durability that adds character to the products. One of the main characteristics of my style is the incorporation of vibrant colors and engaging patterns. I believe that colors and patterns have the power to uplift and energize, creating a sense of joy and positivity. By infusing my designs with these elements, I aim to bring a smile to the faces of users and enhance their overall experience. My approach to design is centered around the user. I prioritize functionality and practicality, ensuring that the designs not only look visually appealing but also serve a purpose in enhancing the user's quality of life. I am constantly inspired by the possibilities offered by new technologies and materials, and I strive to integrate them seamlessly into my designs to create innovative and user-friendly products. DI: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
SK : As a designer living in Hong Kong, I am influenced by the cultural heritage of the city. Hong Kong's unique blend of Eastern and Western influences, its vibrant street culture, and its fast-paced urban lifestyle all contribute to shaping my design aesthetic. The cultural heritage of Hong Kong inspires me to create designs that seamlessly fuse traditional elements with modern innovation. I often incorporate traditional textile techniques, such as knitted jacquard patterns, into my designs to pay homage to the rich cultural heritage of the city. One of the pros of living in Hong Kong is the diverse and multicultural environment. This allows me to interact with people from various backgrounds and gain different perspectives, which in turn enriches my design process. Hong Kong's status as a global hub also offers opportunities to collaborate with international brands and designers, expanding the reach of my designs. However, there are also challenges that come with designing in Hong Kong. The competitive nature of the industry and the high cost of living can be demanding. Finding sufficient revenue solely within the city can be challenging, prompting me to seek opportunities beyond Hong Kong's borders. Overall, living in Hong Kong provides a dynamic and multicultural backdrop for my designs. It encourages me to blend traditional and modern elements, and the international exposure opens doors to a global market. I embrace the cultural heritage of my country while constantly seeking ways to push the boundaries of design innovation.
DI: How do you work with companies?
SK : When collaborating with companies, we work closely with their team to understand their brand identity, values, and objectives. We believe in creating a synergy between our design expertise and their unique vision. The collaboration process typically involves initial meetings to discuss the brand's needs, target audience, and design preferences. We conduct thorough research to gain insights into the market, industry trends, and consumer behavior, ensuring that our designs align with the brand's positioning. Once we have a clear understanding of the project scope and requirements, we proceed with ideation and concept development. We present our design proposals, incorporating innovative ideas, functional considerations, and aesthetic elements that resonate with the brand and its audience. Collaboration also extends to material sourcing, prototyping, and production. DI: What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?
SK : Open and clear communication is crucial for a successful collaboration between companies and designers. Companies should express their goals and expectations clearly, while also considering designers with diverse interests and expertise across various categories. This allows for fresh perspectives and innovative solutions that can span different industries, resulting in impactful design outcomes.
DI: Can you talk a little about your design process?
SK : My design process is personal and human-centered. It begins with finding inspiration and conducting research. I then move on to sketching and refining the concept using design software. Collaboration with engineering teams is essential to ensure the integration of technology. Prototyping and iterative reviews allow for refinement and optimization of the design for the best possible outcome.

DI: Can you describe a day in your life?
SK : A typical day in my life as a designer starts with immersing myself in the creative environment of my studio. Collaborating closely with my team of engineers and production partners, we engage in the iterative design process, constantly refining and perfecting our concepts. I also make it a point to seek inspiration and broaden my horizons by visiting art exhibitions, attending industry events, and engaging with fellow designers. Balancing work and personal well-being, I find time for physical exercise and socializing, as these moments often spark new ideas and help me maintain a fresh perspective in my design journey.
DI: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
SK : One invaluable piece of advice for young designers is to never stop believing in yourself and to seize every opportunity that comes your way. Each experience and task, no matter how small or seemingly insignificant, has the potential to open doors and propel your career forward. It's crucial to continuously prepare yourself, stay motivated, and embrace challenges as opportunities for growth and learning. Remember, success is often born out of perseverance and a willingness to step outside of your comfort zone.
DI: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
SK : As a designer, one of the positives is the opportunity to appreciate and study the work of other designers. It allows me to gain inspiration and insights, and often leads to a personal collection of designs that I bring into my own home. However, one of the challenges can be the fine line between appreciating and being influenced by others' work, and ensuring that my own designs remain original and unique. It requires a delicate balance of staying informed and inspired while maintaining my own creative voice.
DI: What is your "golden rule" in design?
SK : My golden rule in design is to prioritize the user experience above all else. Every design decision I make is centered around creating a positive and meaningful experience for the end user. By putting their needs, comfort, and satisfaction at the forefront, I believe I can create designs that truly resonate and make a difference in their lives.
DI: What skills are most important for a designer?
SK : For a designer, I believe that having a deep understanding of materials is crucial. It allows us to carefully select the most suitable materials for each design, ensuring optimal execution and performance. By leveraging our knowledge of materials, we can create designs that not only look visually appealing but also deliver the desired functionality and user experience.
DI: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?
SK : The CAD system of the 3D knitting machine and our in-house technical construction system are the main tools we use during the design process. Additionally, we have recently started using fashion 3D systems to create final images. In terms of inspiration, we draw from various sources such as fashion trends, lifestyle research, and professional advice. Our team also values collaboration and actively seeks opportunities to work with others, as we believe in learning and gaining inspiration from different perspectives and expertise.
DI: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
SK : As a designer, I find that my inspiration often comes from life itself. Therefore, I prefer not to strictly divide my time between work and leisure. Instead, I strive to maintain a work-life balance that allows me to draw inspiration from various aspects of life. This innovative product was developed in response to feedback from physiotherapists, who highlighted the challenges of applying heat therapy to the shoulder area. The WarmerShoulder is an ultra-slim design that utilizes a three-dimensional knitted fabric, providing comprehensive coverage for the shoulders. Its seamless one-piece construction ensures a soft and cozy experience, while also enhancing blood circulation and reducing fatigue and muscle tension. Weighing only 88 grams, the WarmerShoulder offers enhanced comfort and facilitates unrestricted movement, making heat therapy more convenient and conducive to daily activities.
