DI: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
CJID : My design journey began with a deep passion for spatial aesthetics. Founded CHIUN JU Interior Design, focusing on modern and modern classical interior design. From an early age I was fascinated by art and space, always wanting to change the environment to improve people's lives. My motivation as a designer comes from a desire for innovation and the ability to tell unique stories through the design of spaces. For me, design is not just a profession, but a way to explore the world and push creative boundaries. My goal is to exchange ideas with designers around the world through competitions such as the A' Design Award, create internationally recognized work and continue to develop it.
DI: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
CJID : CHIUN JU Interior Design is a studio specializing in modern and modern-classical interior design, dedicated to integrating aesthetics, functionality, and innovation to create refined and unique living spaces. Our design philosophy focuses on the harmonious blend of spatial atmosphere and human emotion, utilizing materials, lighting, and structure to achieve both practicality and artistic value. Our projects range from residential and commercial spaces to boutique clubs and exhibition areas. We actively participate in international design competitions to bring Taiwanese design to the global stage. We believe design is not just about spatial planning but about crafting unique experiences and value for users. DI: What is "design" for you?
CJID : To me, design is an interpretation and creation of life—it is not only about aesthetics but also the fusion of functionality and emotion. At its core, design is about solving problems, enhancing experiences, and giving spaces unique value. At CHIUN JU Interior Design, we believe that design should be human-centered, responsive to the environment, and sustainable. Every space tells a story, and as designers, we bring these stories to life through light, materials, and structure, creating an atmosphere of comfort, balance, and beauty. Design is more than creation; it is a form of communication that connects people with spaces. Through the A' Design Award, I hope to share our design philosophy with a global audience and explore how design can transcend cultural and geographical boundaries to create a lasting impact.
DI: What kinds of works do you like designing most?
CJID : I enjoy designing modern and modern-classical spaces because they strike a perfect balance between heritage and innovation. I specialize in blending classic elements with contemporary design language, utilizing materials, lighting, and proportions to create spaces that are rich in cultural depth yet suited for modern living.
DI: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
CJID : My favorite designs are those that seamlessly blend historical elegance with modern innovation, particularly in modern and modern-classical interior design. I appreciate designs that harmonize aesthetics, functionality, and emotional connection, creating spaces that are not only visually striking but also enhance the quality of life. At CHIUN JU Interior Design, I especially enjoy using material details, lighting dynamics, and well-balanced proportions to craft sophisticated and multi-layered spaces. DI: What was the first thing you designed for a company?
CJID : The first project I designed for CHIUN JU Interior Design was a residential space that blended modern and modern-classical styles. This project was not just an execution of design principles but also a foundation for shaping our brand identity. In this design, I focused on spatial proportions, lighting dynamics, and material details, aiming to create a sophisticated yet highly livable environment. By incorporating refined lines, rich textures, and soft lighting, I achieved a balance between elegance and comfort. This project became a signature representation of CHIUN JU Interior Design, establishing our commitment to high-quality, refined, and multi-layered designs
DI: What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
CJID : My favorite materials include natural stone, metal elements, and wood, as they bring depth, texture, and timeless beauty to a space. Natural stone, such as marble, enhances elegance with its unique patterns; metal accents add a modern and refined touch through precise craftsmanship; and wood provides warmth, making spaces feel more inviting and human-centric. In terms of technology, I focus on smart control systems and sustainable materials, integrating innovation with design to improve functionality and environmental responsibility. Additionally, I utilize 3D rendering and VR technology to create immersive visual experiences, allowing clients to better understand design concepts in the early stages.
DI: When do you feel the most creative?
CJID : I feel most creative when I am reflecting and observing the world around me. Walking through the streets of France or the UK, where historical architecture blends seamlessly with modern design, or enjoying a coffee by a sunlit coastline, often sparks my imagination. These moments allow me to step outside daily routines and explore how design interacts with its environment, culture, and future trends. Additionally, engaging in deep conversations with clients, understanding their needs and lifestyles, often inspires fresh design concepts. I believe that design is not just about creating—it is about responding to human emotions and spatial experiences.
DI: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
CJID : In the design process, I focus on balancing spatial atmosphere, functionality, details, and material selection. Design is not just about aesthetics; it is about enhancing user experience and creating emotional resonance. At Qun Zhu Interior Design, we emphasize the interplay of light and spatial proportions, using natural and artificial lighting to add depth and warmth to an environment. I also prioritize material details, carefully selecting wood, stone, and metal to craft a sophisticated and textured space. Most importantly, I believe that design should connect with people. Every project is deeply tailored to user needs, ensuring that spaces are both visually appealing and highly functional.
DI: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
CJID : When designing, I experience a mix of excitement, focus, challenge, and fulfillment. Inspiration sparks a sense of creative passion, driving me to shape spaces into meaningful experiences. As I explore materials and lighting, I enter a state of deep concentration, refining every detail for harmony. However, challenges arise in balancing aesthetics, functionality, and client needs. Yet, when the design comes to life and users connect with the space, I feel a profound sense of accomplishment, which fuels my continuous pursuit of innovation.
DI: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
CJID : When my design is realized, I feel joy, accomplishment, and deep satisfaction. Seeing a concept evolve from sketches into a tangible space, with every detail and atmosphere brought to life, is truly exhilarating. The most rewarding moment is witnessing users engage with the space, feeling comfort and connection. It reaffirms that design is more than aesthetics—it is the fusion of emotion and function. This fulfillment fuels my passion, inspiring me to create even more impactful designs in the future.
DI: What makes a design successful?
CJID : A successful design must balance aesthetics, functionality, and emotional connection, ultimately enhancing the user experience and adding value. Design is not just about visual appeal—it must showcase uniqueness through spatial atmosphere, material selection, and meticulous detailing, ensuring users feel both comfort and connection. CJID : When evaluating a design, I first consider functionality, user experience, and overall aesthetics. A great design should not only be visually appealing but also practical and comfortable, allowing users to engage naturally with the space. Next, I assess attention to detail and material selection, as these elements define the design’s depth and refinement. Additionally, innovation and sustainability play a crucial role—a successful design should respond to contemporary needs while maintaining long-term value in both the market and environment. DI: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
CJID : A designer's responsibility to society and the environment is to create designs that integrate aesthetics, functionality, and sustainability, improving lives while minimizing environmental impact. We must carefully consider material choices, long-term usability, and energy efficiency, ensuring that designs not only meet present needs but also remain responsible for the future. Additionally, design should be inclusive and socially impactful, addressing diverse user needs and fostering more welcoming and harmonious spaces. Digital innovations like AI, VR, and parametric design are reshaping how we create, making design more precise and adaptable. Meanwhile, the rise of sustainable materials and circular economy is pushing design beyond aesthetics toward greater environmental responsibility. DI: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?
CJID : My latest works have been showcased in international design competitions and industry exhibitions, providing a platform to share CHIUN JU Interior Design’s philosophy and creations. These exhibitions allow us to connect with global designers and receive valuable market insights, further expanding our brand presence. In the future, I aim to hold exhibitions at Milan Design Week, Maison & Objet, or Tokyo Design Week, presenting our unique interpretation of modern and modern-classical styles. Additionally, I look forward to leveraging A' Design Award to gain more exposure and promote the beauty of Taiwanese design on a global scale.
DI: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
CJID : My design inspiration comes from urban architecture, art, nature, and observations of lifestyle trends. Walking through the streets of France or the UK, I am inspired by the interplay of history and modernity in architecture, which influences my approach to spatial proportions and material selection. Additionally, contemporary art, fashion, travel, and gastronomy help me explore new perspectives on aesthetics and culture. To continuously fuel creativity, I engage with international design exhibitions, competitions, and literature, while exchanging ideas with industry professionals. At CHIUN JU Interior Design, we constantly challenge innovation, ensuring that every project tells a unique story and delivers a globally inspired spatial experience.
DI: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
CJID : My design style blends modern and modern-classical elements, emphasizing spatial proportions, material details, and layered lighting to create elegant and sophisticated environments. I chose to explore this style because it harmonizes historical depth with contemporary functionality, allowing spaces to be both culturally rich and suited for modern living. My approach focuses on user experience and emotional connection. By carefully selecting natural stone, metal, and wood, along with refined lighting compositions, I craft spaces that feel both luxurious and inviting. At Qun Zhu Interior Design, this philosophy drives our mission to create aesthetic yet functional, globally inspired designs, transforming spaces into immersive and timeless experiences.
DI: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
CJID : I live in Taiwan, a place where Eastern and Western cultures blend, deeply influencing my design approach. I incorporate Eastern aesthetics with Western spatial proportions and material selection, creating designs that balance cultural richness with a global perspective. Taiwan's strength lies in its openness and innovation, allowing us to quickly absorb global design trends and integrate them with local craftsmanship. However, challenges arise in budget constraints and cost management, requiring creative solutions to achieve high-quality design within limited resources.
DI: How do you work with companies?
CJID : At CJIUN JU Interior Design, our collaboration with companies is built on clear communication, strategic planning, and design innovation. We deeply understand the brand identity and market needs to ensure that our designs not only align with corporate values but also enhance brand presence. We follow a customized design process, from concept development to execution, ensuring that every detail meets both functional and aesthetic expectations. Additionally, we emphasize close collaboration with suppliers and construction teams to ensure seamless project delivery. CJID : At CHIUN JU Interior Design, our design process revolves around deep understanding, strategic planning, and meticulous execution. Next, we develop concepts and spatial planning, utilizing sketches, 3D renderings, and material testing to refine every detail. CJID : My favorite design pieces not only possess aesthetic value but also reflect my design philosophy and lifestyle: 1.Italian designer furniture – A perfect blend of modern aesthetics and comfort, showcasing craftsmanship and material excellence. 2.Custom marble dining table – Unique textures enhance spatial depth and add a touch of luxury. 3.Classic modern chair – A functional and aesthetic statement piece that elevates the ambiance. 4.Handcrafted lighting fixtures – Thoughtfully designed to create dynamic lighting effects and enhance spatial depth. 5.Art pieces or sculptures – Adding personality and cultural richness, making the space more meaningful. These pieces are not just decorations but also expressions of my appreciation for design details and refined living.
DI: Can you describe a day in your life?
CJID : My day begins with morning reflection and gathering design inspiration. I spend time reading about design trends, architecture, and art, ensuring that I stay engaged with new concepts. In the morning, I focus on team discussions and client meetings, reviewing design proposals and project progress to ensure that every detail aligns with our goals. Afternoons are dedicated to design ideation and development, where I refine concepts through sketching, 3D modeling, and collaborating with suppliers to perfect spatial details. In the evening, I enjoy taking a walk or savoring coffee, allowing my thoughts to settle and drawing inspiration from everyday life. Nighttime is for strategic planning and international collaboration, exchanging ideas with design partners to keep creativity evolving. This routine enables me to continually create meaningful and valuable works at CHIUN JU Interior Design.
DI: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
CJID : For young designers, my advice is to stay curious, keep learning, and explore constantly. Design is not just about aesthetics; it requires a deep understanding of space, materials, lighting, and human interactions. Observing the world and experiencing different cultures will expand creativity and perspective. Additionally, patience and practice are essential. Great design comes from attention to detail and accumulated experience—don’t fear failure, but learn and grow from challenges. Most importantly, develop your own design language, stay true to your unique style, and use design as a way to express meaningful ideas. DI: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
CJID : The greatest advantage of being a designer is the ability to transform spaces and influence how people experience their surroundings. Design allows us to bring ideas to life, experiment with materials and lighting, and collaborate with professionals across various industries, expanding our creative perspectives. However, challenges exist. Design requires meticulous attention to detail and cross-disciplinary collaboration. Projects often face budget constraints, time pressure, and evolving client demands, requiring designers to be adaptable and problem-solvers.
DI: What is your "golden rule" in design?
CJID : My golden rule in design is "balancing aesthetics, functionality, and emotion." A successful design should not only be visually appealing but also provide a comfortable user experience while creating a meaningful emotional connection. At CHIUN JU Interior Design, we believe that attention to detail defines quality. By carefully considering spatial proportions, material selection, and lighting, we create designs that are not only layered and sophisticated but also tell a unique story. Each project should have its own identity while meeting the needs of its users—ensuring that design is not just decoration but an experience that enhances everyday life. DI: What skills are most important for a designer?
CJID : For a designer, the most essential skills are creative thinking, spatial awareness, attention to detail, and communication skills. Creativity allows designers to push boundaries and create unique experiences, while spatial awareness ensures that designs align with ergonomics, flow, and functionality. Additionally, material selection and lighting application enhance the depth and quality of a design, while meticulous attention to detail ensures refinement and coherence. Strong communication skills are equally crucial, enabling designers to understand client needs, collaborate effectively with teams, and coordinate with contractors to bring designs to life. DI: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?
CJID : During the design process, I utilize a variety of tools, including digital software, physical materials, and sources of inspiration. •Design Software: AutoCAD, SketchUp, 3ds Max, V-Ray, and Photoshop for spatial planning, 3D modeling, and visual rendering. •Sketching & Notebooks: Hand sketches and design journals to quickly capture creative ideas. •Material Samples: Stone, wood, and metal samples to ensure textures align with the design concept. •Sources of Inspiration: Architectural and design books, international exhibitions (e.g., Milan Design Week), travel experiences, and art. DI: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
CJID : Design is a time-intensive process that requires focus and patience, making time management essential for maintaining efficiency. I ensure smooth progress through a structured workflow. •Setting clear timelines: Breaking projects into phases with defined milestones for concept development, design refinement, and execution to keep track of progress. •Efficient team collaboration: Maintaining real-time communication with team members and suppliers to enhance decision-making. •Dedicated creative time: Allocating uninterrupted design sessions daily to maximize creativity. At CHIUN JU Interior Design, we balance creativity and execution with these strategies, ensuring that our designs maintain both quality and efficiency.
DI: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
CJID : The time required to design a project depends on the scale, complexity, and level of detail. At CHIUN JU Interior Design, a complete design process typically includes concept development, design refinement, material selection, technical testing, and final execution, which may take anywhere from a few weeks to several months. Small-scale projects (furniture or single-space design): Approximately 4-8 weeks, covering initial design, adjustments, and production. Medium to large-scale projects (residential or commercial spaces): Around 3-6 months, including space planning, detailed design, and construction coordination. High-end custom projects: Typically 6-8 months or more, ensuring every detail is meticulously executed. Design is a meticulous process, and we focus on balancing aesthetics and functionality, ensuring that every project achieves the highest quality standards.
DI: What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer?
CJID : As a designer, the most frequently asked question I receive is: “How can high-quality design be achieved within a budget?” Many clients want to create aesthetic and functional spaces while working within financial constraints, which is a core focus at CHIUN JU Interior Design. Our approach involves strategic budget allocation, prioritizing key design elements such as material selection, lighting, and craftsmanship. Additionally, by incorporating innovative design solutions and efficient spatial planning, we enhance the overall aesthetic and user experience. Even within budget limitations, we ensure that designs remain elegant, layered, and enduring. This approach not only satisfies clients but also maintains the long-term value of the project.
DI: What was your most important job experience?
CJID : One of my most significant job experiences was leading CHIUN JU Interior Design to participate in international design competitions and winning awards. This not only elevated our brand value but also gained international recognition for our design philosophy. Through this journey, I realized that great design is not just about aesthetics but also about integrating market trends, client needs, and a global perspective. Additionally, collaborating with professionals from different fields, including architects, lighting designers, and craftsmen, taught me how to balance creativity with execution, ensuring that designs are successfully realized. These experiences have been invaluable in shaping my design career and continuously driving me toward excellence.
DI: Who are some of your clients?
CJID : At CHIUN JU Interior Design, our clients range from high-end residential homeowners to luxury commercial spaces, corporate offices, and brand-exclusive clubs. We collaborate with discerning private homeowners who seek sophisticated, personalized living environments. Additionally, we design unique brand spaces for luxury retail, hospitality, dining, and premium office settings, enhancing both brand identity and user experience. Our clients value not only aesthetics but also the balance between functionality and commercial impact. By deeply understanding their needs, we provide tailored spatial solutions that reflect both brand and personal identity, ensuring a lasting influence in the industry.
DI: What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?
CJID : I enjoy designing high-end residential and luxury commercial spaces the most because these projects allow for in-depth exploration of materials, spatial proportions, and lighting dynamics, creating unique and storytelling environments. In high-end residential design, I love working closely with clients to translate their personal style and lifestyle into a tailor-made space. Luxury commercial spaces, on the other hand, challenge me to materialize brand identity through design, crafting spaces that offer market competitiveness and immersive experiences. These designs not only enhance aesthetics but also foster deep emotional connections, which is what makes design truly captivating.
DI: What are your future plans? What is next for you?
CJID : In the future, I plan to expand CHIUN JU Interior Design’s international presence and continue participating in global design competitions and exhibitions, introducing our design philosophy to a wider audience. I also aim to elevate high-end residential and luxury commercial design by exploring more refined and innovative solutions, incorporating sustainability and smart design concepts. Additionally, I plan to venture into furniture and accessories design, creating distinctive pieces that add depth and elegance to spaces. Through these initiatives, I hope to not only advance my career but also bring greater recognition to Taiwanese design on the global stage.
DI: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
CJID : At CHIUN JU Interior Design, we combine team collaboration with individual creativity. I personally oversee concept development, spatial planning, and aesthetic direction, ensuring that every project reflects our brand’s unique identity and high-quality standards. At the same time, I work closely with a team of designers, architects, lighting specialists, and skilled craftsmen to bring every detail to life. This collaborative approach not only enhances design integrity but also allows for deeper creativity through interdisciplinary exchange. By leveraging the strengths of our team, we create spaces that seamlessly blend aesthetics, functionality, and market value.
DI: Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about?
CJID : Currently, CHIUN JU Interior Design is working on several exciting projects, including high-end residential and luxury commercial spaces. We are particularly focused on integrating smart technology and sustainable materials, creating spaces that are both aesthetically refined and highly functional. One of our projects is a modern-classical luxury residence, where we use marble, metal, and custom-made furniture to craft a richly layered and narrative-driven space. Additionally, we are designing a luxury flagship boutique, incorporating an immersive experience to elevate the brand identity.
