Designer Interview of Mani & K Interior Design:
DI: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
M&KID : MANI&K INTERIOR DESIGN is a company in Hong Kong specializing in interior design and renovation projects. We focuses on designing residential, commercial, and office spaces, including renovation projects and custom furniture. The mission of MANI&K INTERIOR DESIGN is to create comfortable, practical, and beautiful spaces through creative designs. Upholding values of integrity, quality, and excellence, the company continuously strives for excellence to offer the best indoor design experience to its customers.
DI: What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
M&KID : Material: Glass that forgets it’s fragile. We’ve been using a German-engineered laminated glass with embedded titanium filaments,it cracks dramatically under stress but won’t shatter, turning structural failure into living sculpture. There’s something poetic about a material that embraces its vulnerability as a feature.
DI: When do you feel the most creative?
M&KID : I’m most creative when I’m almost too deep in it— When a client says ‘No way,’ and suddenly my brain flips into survival mode, hacking out solutions I’d never have thought of in a ‘safe’ design process."
DI: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
M&KID : I design spaces like a composer writes scores—with rigorous attention to time (how users' experience unfolds minute-by-minute), texture (materials), and tonality. That’s the heart of my focus: designing behavior, not just surfaces."
DI: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
M&KID : When I catch users interacting with the space in ways we didn’t anticipate—a child tracing the grooves of a wall we designed for acoustics, or strangers naturally gathering in a corner meant only as circulation space.
DI: What makes a design successful?
M&KID : Makes a design successful, it's measured in the unplanned moments that happen after. For eg: Mutates, when users hack it—hanging coats on a sculptural installation, turning a hallway into an impromptu meeting spot.
DI: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
M&KID : I hunt inspiration in the gaps between: 1.What materials pretend to be vs. what they ache to become 2.How spaces are programmed vs. how bodies actually move
DI: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
M&KID : Style is the enemy of relevance. What I practice is contextual alchemy. My approach rejects signature aesthetics in favor of three principles: 1. Anti-Styling 2. Human Forensic Design 3. Controlled Decay Engineering
DI: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
M&KID : If your first 100 projects will suck. The trick is to make each failure usefully different from the last. The industry doesn’t need more ‘good’ designers, it needs more dangerously curious ones.
