We, as the Designer Interviews ("DI") had the distinct pleasure and opportunity to interview award-winning, most creative and innovative Yu-Chun Huang ("YH").
Specializing in innovative, technology-driven solutions, this practice explores the intersection of humans, space, and the built environment. With expertise in brain-computer interface technology, computer-aided design, and virtual reality, the work spans from smart space design using mind commands to immersive digital museum experiences and futuristic online shopping platforms (VROS). The goal is to push the boundaries of computational technology, enhancing user interaction with spaces and contributing to advancements in both design and technology.

Designer Interview of Yu-Chun Huang:
DI: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
YH : My background is in architecture, from undergraduate through Ph.D. During graduate school, I began exploring computer science and became interested in combining human-computer interaction (HCI) with smart space design. My master’s thesis used a brain-computer interface to create a smart workspace that helps users stay alert—this sparked my shift toward interactive and tech-integrated design.
DI: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
YH : I lead independent research and design projects under my studio, Y.C. Huang Studio, which explores the intersection of architecture, HCI, VR/AR, BCI, and emerging technologies. My work spans smart environments powered by brain-computer interfaces, immersive VR retail experiences, interactive exhibitions, and future home design. I’m currently teaching Digital Tangible User Interfaces at Dartmouth College, while continuing to explore how emerging technologies can connect people, space, and interaction in more intelligent and meaningful ways.
DI: What is "design" for you?
YH : For me, design is about making life simple, easy, and joyful. It’s not about adding decoration for decoration’s sake, but about creating something that is efficient, thoughtful, and balanced with aesthetics. Good design solves problems without overwhelming the user—it simplifies life while bringing beauty and clarity to everyday experiences.
DI: What kinds of works do you like designing most?
YH : I enjoy designing projects that combine seemingly unrelated technologies to create new possibilities. For example, ARID brings together AR/VR and interior design to reimagine how people experience and make decisions about physical space. I’m most inspired when I can bridge different fields and generate unexpected connections through design.
