Designer Interview of Moeko Kakizoe:

DI: What is "design" for you?

MK : Design is how we solve problems beautifully. It’s not just about how things look, but how they work and feel in real life.

DI: What kinds of works do you like designing most?

MK : I enjoy designing products that blend emotion with utility—things people can use daily but that also tell a story or bring joy.

DI: When do you feel the most creative?

MK : I often feel most inspired during my daily walks or while traveling. These moments of movement and change help refresh my mind and spark new ideas.

DI: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?

MK : It's a mix of excitement and deep concentration. There’s joy in problem-solving and shaping something meaningful from nothing.

DI: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?

MK : Designers must consider long-term impact and choose sustainable solutions.

DI: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?

MK : My last exhibition was in 2023 at the Frankfurt Book Fair, where I showcased an early prototype of the Jonde Book Cover Bag. I would love to participate in future literary or design events in Europe or Asia.

DI: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?

MK : I often find inspiration while walking or traveling. Everyday moments, such as watching people read on a bench, can spark ideas.

DI: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?

MK : I currently live in Germany, but I’m originally from Japan. I believe my design is shaped by the simplicity and mindfulness rooted in Japanese culture, as well as the sense of functionality and deep responsibility toward sustainability that I learned from living in Germany.

DI: What was your most important job experience?

MK : Developing my first product from scratch and seeing people actually use it was transformative for me.

DI: Who are some of your clients?

MK : Book lovers, professionals, and even spiritual leaders who resonate with the idea of mindful, elegant living.

DI: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?

MK : Just a note of gratitude — thank you for taking the time to explore my work and design philosophy.
