Designer Interview of Phox Design & Engineering Studio:
DI: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
PD&ES : Always loved to draw since I was little, but the idea to become a designer came in my late teens. My passion for cars and bikes made me want to become a designer, so I enrolled at IAAD in Turin and graduated in 2011.
DI: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
PD&ES : Phox Design & Engineering is a relatively young design studio in Padua, we started in 2015 with the idea to create a studio that could design and engineer any industrial product and take our clients from the idea to the realization of the product.
DI: What is "design" for you?
PD&ES : Design for me is something beautiful, something that provokes an emotion at first sight, but also something that is interesting and functional. Design is a creative solution to a problem, the ability to create something beautiful, functional an ergonomical that is feasible.
DI: What kinds of works do you like designing most?
PD&ES : As an industrial designer you can be working with really different products and fields of application, and every project has its challenges and is interesting in its own way. What I enjoy the most designing are consumer products because it’s always interesting studying the functionality and ergonomics of something that is going to be used by a lot of different people.
DI: What was the first thing you designed for a company?
PD&ES : The first thing I designed for a company was a joystick for the interior of an excavator
DI: What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
PD&ES : Favorite material is injection molded plastic as it gives you a lot of freedom to create different shapes and its challenging to create something beautiful and different but industrially feasible without escalating the investments on molds and production.
DI: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
PD&ES : The primary focus of any project is the looks, I believe that design should be beautiful, then as a secondary focus there is the interaction, how the product is going to be used and handled.
DI: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
PD&ES : Most of the time is joy and excitement to create something new, something that didn’t exist before
DI: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
PD&ES : When my designs are realized I feel proud for the most part, and satisfied that I could translate my thought in something real
DI: What makes a design successful?
PD&ES : There are many reasons for a design to be successful, it could be for the looks, for the functionality for how it interacts with the people and environment, but I think that for a design to be really successful it has to mix aesthetics and functionality seamlessly together
