We, as the Designer Interviews ("DI") had the distinct pleasure and opportunity to interview award-winning, most creative and innovative Mateus Morgan ("MM").
General graphic designer with more than 12 years experience in the market. Specialist in 3D (organic modeling and hard surface) and Design. Owner of a Design Studio recently with two partners, having attended clients such as Vivo, Amanco, C & A and Editora Abril: Superinteressante and Mundo Estranho, offering quality work for large Brazilian clients. I have a lot of knowledge in the footwear industry, where I attended all the biggest brands in the city where I was born, which is known as the national capital of men's shoes.

Designer Interview of Mateus Morgan:
DI: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
MM : I graduated in graphic design and since 2006 i worked as art director in design agencies in my city. Time ago i started to work as a freelancer doing jobs for great Brazilian clients.
DI: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
MM : Morgan Studio is situated in Franca, SP here in Brazil. The studio is focused in 3d and product visualization.
DI: What is "design" for you?
MM : Is a form to translate sensation trough image.
DI: What kinds of works do you like designing most?
MM : Key visual for product and packaging also.
DI: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
MM : It's Fly Boot key art. The first i had nominated in A'Design Awards and was a very pleasant project to do.
DI: What was the first thing you designed for a company?
MM : Was a product design for a shoe industry.
DI: What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
MM : 3d softwares overall like 3ds Max and Zbrush.
DI: When do you feel the most creative?
MM : At night in my bed just before sleeping.
DI: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
MM : The sensory and composition aspects.
DI: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
MM : A little anxiety at first, then the process becomes satisfying as it goes right
DI: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
MM : Relief (because sometimes the process is very exhausting) and pride. But pride begins to disappear as I begin to think about what I might have done differently.
DI: What makes a design successful?
MM : When the sensory message is achieved.
DI: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
MM : The feeling that design was able to pass at the end and the composition or diagramation aspects.
DI: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
MM : The designer is a keeper of a message the company want to show for your public. A good designer can translate this message trough the art.
DI: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
MM : I think the VR and 3d printing are the future of design.
DI: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?
MM : I had some exposure in university time, but it was a long time ago. If it goes well, my next will be in Milan.
DI: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
MM : In general classic paintings, that always have great composition ang lighting technics.
DI: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
MM : As a generalist i always have to change my style. But i always think about the sensation the art brings at first.
DI: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
MM : I live in Brazil, a strong cultural country. But i don't stuck with just brazilian culture to do my arts, the design nowadays started to be more global and multicultural.
DI: How do you work with companies?
MM : I work by my design studio.
DI: What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?
MM : A good designer can be versatile and able to break design rules whenever necessary.
DI: Can you talk a little about your design process?
MM : My process start with reference research and then i start some composition tests.
DI: What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?
MM : Ironically i don't have appealing design items at home.
DI: Can you describe a day in your life?
MM : I start usually at 8am and finish at 18h pm. But as a studio owner i have some flexibility, so it's not a routine.
DI: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
MM : Always use the reference image and learn the basics until you are experienced.
DI: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
MM : A good designer can be recognized such an artist and have some benefits with this. But in general is very hard to be well paid and this work can be a lot time consuming.
DI: What is your "golden rule" in design?
MM : It's the composition. Arts with poor composition are always poor appealing.
DI: What skills are most important for a designer?
MM : Lighting, color, composition and diagramation skills.
DI: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?
MM : 3d softwares overall. I'm not a assidual book reader so everything i learn is online.
DI: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
MM : I try to always wake up at 8am and try to focus at work time, avoiding distractions.
DI: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
MM : A good design takes about 2 or 3 weeks.
DI: What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer?
MM : Where i learned my skills and the softwares i use.
DI: What was your most important job experience?
MM : Was the Fly Boot key visual.
DI: Who are some of your clients?
MM : Vivo, Amanco, Editora Abril (4Rodas, Superinteressante and Mundo Estranho magazines), Vedacit.
DI: What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?
MM : I love packaging design. I consider that is one of more important form of design.
DI: What are your future plans? What is next for you?
MM : Is to participate some competitions and show my work worldwide.
DI: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
MM : I worked with a team with 2 members, but nowadays is just me and some partners. Sometimes we do the work together and sometimes not.
DI: Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about?
MM : For now i am working in a 3d motion but the job started right now and there's not too much to talk yet.
