DI: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?

YZ : I am an object designer based in Shanghai, holding a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a Master of Fine Arts in Furniture Design from the Rhode Island School of Design. My work has been featured in various international exhibitions and design fairs. It is characterized by creature-like, anthropomorphic designs that draw inspiration from both nature and everyday life. The core of my design philosophy revolves around fostering joy and interaction. My furniture and objects can be likened to NPCs (non-player characters) in the Utopian Fantasy game I've envisioned, inviting users to become active participants in a unique narrative. My journey into design has its roots in a lifelong fascination with the transformative power of art and a deep desire to create immersive and joyful experiences for people.

DI: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?

YZ : I initiated Studio Yuetopia back in 2014, right here in Chicago, USA, then the studio actually landed in Shanghai China. You might know me for my knack for breathing life into ordinary objects. What drives me is a vision of crafting a tangible "Utopia" where people and objects coexist in perfect harmony, interconnected. My artwork delves into conversations about nature, life, and emotions, and you'll find them taking various forms like installation art, furniture, and home decor. But it's not just about looks or practicality; I like to sprinkle in a bit of humor to add joy and surprise to your interactions with my designs. I take pride in my craftsmanship, which shines through in the diverse range of works I create. Each piece carries a deep appreciation for the natural world and human emotions. Whether it's through an installation, a piece of furniture, or home decor, my creations spin a tale that invites you to experience a delightful and utopian connection between people and objects.

DI: What is "design" for you?

YZ : To me, "design" holds a profound meaning that goes beyond mere aesthetics. It represents a potent means of expression and a method of problem-solving that combines both form and function. It's the art of purposeful creation, where beauty and functionality come together to elevate experiences and evoke emotions. Design is a language, a way to convey ideas, narratives, and values through tangible and visual mediums. It involves a deep understanding of user or audience needs and the skill to craft solutions that not only fulfill those needs but also ignite a sense of delight and engagement.

DI: What kinds of works do you like designing most?

YZ : 01.What kinds of works do you like designing most? I have a strong inclination towards designing creations that exude joy, interactivity, and an element of delightful surprise. My true passion lies in crafting furniture and objects that rise above mere functionality, offering users immersive experiences. There's immense fulfillment in designing pieces that beckon people to engage, explore, and become integral participants in a captivating narrative. I'm deeply captivated by creature-like and anthropomorphic designs that draw inspiration from the beauty of nature and the nuances of everyday life. Infusing my works with humor and unexpected elements is a source of great enjoyment, adding layers of depth and fun to the user experience. Designs that stir emotions and elicit a positive response, where users can't help but exclaim, "How delightful!" during their interaction, align perfectly with my artistic vision. In essence, I gravitate towards designs that break free from the ordinary, encouraging people to wander, experiment, and play with the pieces. The ultimate goal is to establish a profound connection between the user and the work, making each interaction memorable and, above all, a source of pure delight.

DI: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?

YZ : My favorite design has to be the SEAt Urchin Rocking Chair. It takes inspiration from the Spun Chair but adds a unique twist by embodying the form of a sea urchin. This infusion of marine aesthetics not only brings visual delight but also introduces a sense of playfulness to the space it occupies. The rocking function adds an interactive dimension, inviting users to engage with the chair in a dynamic way. The combination of the sea urchin-inspired design and the rocking feature creates a multisensory experience, offering both visual and tactile enjoyment. What I particularly adore about this design is its ability to transcend the conventional notion of a chair. It's not just a functional piece of furniture; it's a source of joy and whimsy. The SEAt Urchin Chair transforms a simple act like sitting into a playful and delightful experience, perfectly aligning with my design philosophy of infusing everyday objects with a touch of magic and surprise.

DI: What is your favorite material / platform / technology?

YZ : My favorite material, without a doubt, is wood. It holds a special place in my heart because it serves as the canvas for my three-dimensional creations. Wood provides the perfect medium for giving life to my designs, enabling me to sculpt and shape objects with precision and artistic flair. Wood's versatility as a material offers boundless opportunities for creativity. It can be skillfully crafted into intricate forms, showcasing the inherent, organic beauty of the material itself. The warmth, texture, and natural characteristics of wood contribute significantly to the overall aesthetic appeal of my designs. What's more, the sustainable and environmentally friendly nature of wood aligns seamlessly with my values as a designer. It allows me to create pieces that not only captivate visually but also resonate with a sense of responsibility toward our planet.

DI: When do you feel the most creative?

YZ : I've noticed that some of my most creative moments tend to happen during the night. The peacefulness and the decrease in external distractions create an ideal setting for deep concentration and self-reflection. The quiet of the night gives my mind the freedom to roam, venturing into unexplored creative realms.

DI: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?

Aesthetics play a pivotal role in my creative expression because I aim to craft designs that not only function well but also evoke emotions and spark joy. While functionality is essential, I believe that the appearance of a design is what initially captures attention and establishes a connection with the audience. I draw inspiration from creature-like and anthropomorphic forms, which are influenced by nature and everyday life. The emphasis on appearance enables me to create pieces that transcend conventional design, becoming immersive experiences for users. The goal is to invoke a sense of wonder and playfulness, encouraging individuals to interact with the designs and become part of the utopian fantasy I've envisioned. However, it's crucial to note that even though I prioritize appearance, I ensure that the designs remain practical and user-friendly. The interactive nature of my works adds a layer of functionality, as I want users to engage with the pieces and share in the joy and surprises embedded within them. This approach allows me to strike a balance between aesthetics and function, creating designs that are not only visually captivating but also bring delight to those who interact with them.

DI: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?

YZ : When I'm immersed in the design process, a whirlwind of emotions accompanies me along the way. Initially, there's a palpable excitement that courses through me as a new idea takes shape, sparking my creativity. This excitement is closely followed by a profound sense of inspiration, drawn from a myriad of sources and experiences, fueling my designs with fresh perspectives. Curiosity is my constant companion throughout the process, as I eagerly explore uncharted creative territories, seeking innovative solutions. Alongside this curiosity, there's a deep sense of joy that I find in the act of designing itself—a pure and unadulterated pleasure. Yet, the design journey is not without its challenges, and frustration occasionally makes its presence felt. These moments of struggle and problem-solving are integral to the creative process. When I finally overcome these challenges and witness my design taking shape, a wave of satisfaction washes over me, signifying an accomplishment that brings fulfillment. Moreover, the connection I strive to establish between my designs and the audience is a powerful emotion. This connection resonates deeply with me, as it means that my creations have succeeded in forging a meaningful bond. Finally, moments of reflection punctuate my design journey, offering opportunities for introspection and refinement. DI: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?

YZ : When my designs are realized and brought into the physical world, a wave of emotions washes over me. First and foremost, there's an overwhelming sense of elation. Witnessing my creative ideas take form and come to life fills me with profound happiness and excitement. Accompanying this elation is a deep sense of pride. I feel a strong accomplishment and satisfaction knowing that my vision has been successfully translated into a tangible reality. It's a moment of personal triumph. Moreover, there's a profound feeling of fulfillment. Seeing the culmination of hard work, dedication, and creative energy materialize is deeply satisfying. It's a sense of completeness and contentment, knowing that the design journey has reached its destination. Lastly, but certainly not least, there's an overwhelming sense of gratitude. I'm keenly aware that the realization of my designs often involves a collaborative effort. I'm grateful for the team and collaborators who have contributed their skills and expertise, helping to bring my designs to life. These emotions collectively define the rewarding moment when a design transforms from a concept into a tangible and impactful creation.

DI: What makes a design successful?

YZ : To me, the hallmark of a successful design lies in its ability to bring a smile to the user's face. When a design has the power to evoke joy and happiness, it has achieved its ultimate goal. Success in design is measured by the positive emotions it elicits and the delight it brings to those who interact with it.

DI: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?

YZ : When evaluating a design as either good or bad, my primary considerations revolve around two key aspects. Firstly, I assess whether the design establishes a sense of connection with me. Does it resonate with my emotions and values? Does it communicate a message or narrative that I can relate to? This sense of connection often plays a pivotal role in determining the design's quality. Secondly, I look at whether the design invites me to interact with it. Does it spark my curiosity and encourage me to engage with it physically or mentally? Designs that prompt interaction and engagement tend to be more compelling and successful in my view. These two factors, a sense of connection and an invitation to interact, are fundamental to how I judge the quality of a design.

DI: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?

YZ : My design inspiration is rooted in the subtle connections between nature, everyday life, and human emotions. I draw influence from the underwater world, appreciating its diverse forms and creatures, which often find their way into my designs, lending them creature-like and anthropomorphic qualities. Ordinary experiences play a significant role in shaping the narratives of my designs, elevating everyday beauty into interactive objects. The internet's vastness also contributes to the interactive aspects of my work. To fuel my creativity, I immerse myself in art exhibitions, design fairs, and various cultural experiences. My travels between cities like Shanghai and Chicago broaden my perspectives, and I stay informed about current art and design trends, ensuring my work remains relevant. The interplay between my personal experiences and exposure to different cultures continuously fuels my creative process, crafting a utopian fantasy that invites users to be a part of the narrative.

DI: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?

YZ : My design style seamlessly blends creature-like, anthropomorphic forms inspired by elements of nature, everyday life, and the digital realm. This distinctive approach is rooted in my fascination with the underwater world, an appreciation for the beauty found in routine experiences, and a deep desire to create immersive and joyful interactions. The exploration of this unique style is fueled by a dedicated commitment to infuse everyday objects with a delightful sense of humor and unexpected surprises, encouraging users to engage with a utopian fantasy. The primary characteristics of this style include the incorporation of organic, fluid forms inspired by nature, an anthropomorphic quality that adds personality and charm, and a strong focus on interactivity. In my design philosophy, aesthetics and functionality hold equal importance. User experience is at the forefront, with the intention of evoking emotions and fostering joy through meaningful engagement. Each design serves as a narrative, with users taking on pivotal roles in the unfolding story as they interact with the pieces. This holistic perspective guides my creative process, resulting in designs that transcend conventional boundaries and offer unique and enriching experiences.

DI: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?

YZ : I currently reside in Shanghai, China, and it's evident that the rich cultural heritage of this country has a significant influence on my designs. It adds depth and inspiration to my work. China's blend of historical traditions and contemporary dynamism shapes my perspective and contributes to the unique elements in my creations. Designing in China has its advantages. The cultural references here inspire innovation, and the design landscape is ever-evolving, offering room for experimentation. Access to diverse materials and craftsmanship is another positive aspect that enriches my creative process. However, there are challenges as well. Balancing traditional influences with a desire for modern design can sometimes be tricky. Finding that sweet spot between preserving cultural authenticity and pushing creative boundaries can be a delicate task. In summary, living in China provides a backdrop of cultural influences and opportunities that influence my design perspective. It's a dynamic environment for creative exploration, though it does require a thoughtful and nuanced approach to navigate cultural nuances effectively.

DI: Can you talk a little about your design process?

YZ : It's interesting to note that my design process is somewhat unique compared to many other designers. I often find inspiration from an unexpected source: social media. There are moments when I'll be deep into binge-watching TikTok videos, and suddenly, an idea for a design will spring to mind.

DI: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?

YZ : The timeline for my design projects can vary significantly. Some designs come to fruition remarkably quickly, with just a day's work from the initial idea to the finished piece. However, there are also projects that demand much more time and patience, sometimes stretching beyond two years as I refine and perfect the concept.
