YangYang Liao studied industrial design engineering at the School of Design and Art, Beijing University of Technology, with a focus on human-computer interaction design, product design and dynamic visual design. I have extensive experience in practical projects in the areas of mechanical equipment, public transportation, household appliances, personal products and brand image design. I am also actively involved in social practice, working with my supervisors to complete relevant projects, participating in design competitions and various academic forums. DI: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?

YL : I am a classmate who graduated from the Industrial Design Department of Beijing Institute of Technology, and now I only work with Xiaomi. The reason why I want to be a designer is because design is a discipline that uses creativity to change the world. This thing is wonderful and an affirmation of idealism.

DI: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?

YL : Xiaomi is a Chinese mobile phone manufacturing company that also has an ecological chain and other industrial chains.

DI: What kinds of works do you like designing most?

YL : Design works that explore the boundaries of humanity.

DI: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?

YL : Musk’s design for commercial rockets is a design that combines engineering aesthetics and creativity for the future world.

DI: What was the first thing you designed for a company?

YL : Xiaomi 13ultra photography kit.

YL : Simplicity and science fiction are my favorite styles. In commercial design, I pay more attention to practicality and user experience.

YL : Maintain your passion and idealism, and stay true to yourself.

DI: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?

YL : The pursuit of freedom at the spiritual level is an advantage, but at the spiritual level you have to bear the pressure of being independent.
