We, as the Designer Interviews ("DI") had the distinct pleasure and opportunity to interview award-winning, most creative and innovative Ayhan Güneri ("AG").
Ayhan Güneri was born in Istanbul in 1965. After completing his primary and secondary education in Istanbul, he studied interior archictecture at Mimar Sinan University. Between 1989-1999, he managed industrial and interior design works together. In 2000, with his proffessional education and industrial knowledge, he established Ayhan Güneri Mimarlık Hizmetleri ( Architectural Services). Since, the beginnig of his proffessional works, he and his colleagues involved more than 100 projects in Turkey and abroad. With manifacturing activity; textile-leather-shoe-furniture-law-insurance trade- automotive-chemistry-machine-electronic-computer software sectors, for areas of speacial life, we did shops-showrooms-offices-fairstands, they made for reflects companies corparate identity. They always interested in, physical and psychological conditions, ergonomi, functions of each space. Every project is a new exciment for them. At the end of the project, their interest not just the places, the most important thing is people, who live in that place, feel privilege, its their proud and happiness. They always pay attention to be innovative, radical and punctual when they improve the project. All the project they have start with business relations, at the end of the project they became a good friends. They appreciate for preferring them.

DI: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
AG : It appeared naturally. I did not force myself for it. I found myself in a design. The truth is that the design comes naturally to me.
DI: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
AG : Established in 2005 Ayhan Güneri Mimarlık Hizmetleri, has produced more than 150 designs of spaces and designing new ones for the leading companies in many sectors in a short time.
DI: What is "design" for you?
AG : All of patients that meets the needs, can be design. It can be sometimes service design and sometimes interior design.
DI: What kinds of works do you like designing most?
AG : We like to design general living areas, excited to discover users common expectations.
DI: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
AG : The most favorite design is to be the latest design. The correct design is not search for old design.
DI: What was the first thing you designed for a company?
AG : Set up an Office in England.
DI: What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
AG : Changes according to the place and structure, sometimes natural material, sometimes technological material.
DI: When do you feel the most creative?
AG : To create first design.
DI: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
AG : Research.
DI: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
AG : This is a feeling that can not be expressed it happens.

AG : Anthropology, Technology
DI: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
AG : What has been done until now ? What are the missing points? What should be the solution, What can I add with my viewpoint.
DI: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
AG : People’s expectations is my inspriation.
DI: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
AG : I am living in İstanbul that has legacy of a culture which based on thousands of years. Old and new, incorrect and correct are interbedded. İstanbul is an cosmapolitan city. Ideal for design.
DI: How do you work with companies?
AG : As architectural solution partners.
DI: What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?
AG : Sector, company, brand, product, group of the target audience, the economy and the world market should be known by designer and the designer should produce successful designs with this logic. I would suggest the companies should contact with designers like this.
DI: Can you talk a little about your design process?
AG : The process of working that extending need to procurement.
DI: What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?
AG : Local artist oil paintings, Corbusier Lc 1 seat, Philippe Starck dr No Seat-Table, Alessi household appliances and etc.
DI: Can you describe a day in your life?
AG : Everyday; experiencing in differences. I wake up at 6, 7 in general. I have no working hours. I think architecture is that life style business. I am committed to social and cultural activities.
DI: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
AG : Search, visit, read, design new whithout fear.
DI: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
AG : Always nested with the best, sometimes it is exciting and sometimes concern.
DI: What is your "golden rule" in design?
AG : Search, Analysis, Design, Identify deficiencies, Refresh
DI: What skills are most important for a designer?
AG : To be a good observer.
DI: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?
AG : Latest Software, Highly Configurable accessories, Interneti Books, Knowledge base before everything.
DI: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
AG : My job is my lifestyle. How much time I need to design, it can have time.
DI: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
AG : Space design usually start and finish between 3 and 6 months.

DI: What was your most important job experience?
AG : Metal furniture workshop which i establish at my school term (1989). Valuable for me cause of being space to make real Project.

DI: What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?
AG : Retail. Comes at the beginning of multi-user spaces.

AG : To improve the design discipline, be a firm that capable of multi-national design.
DI: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
AG : There was a design philosophy, with this philosophy make design sometimes myself sometimes with team .
