Designer Interview of Hironari Itoi:

DI: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?

HI : Japan is a country with many earthquakes.The design has been despised to increase the earthquake resistance of the building.I started designing houses because I wanted to make beautiful cityscapes.

DI: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?

HI : My design studio mainly designs houses and buildings in Tokyo,Japan.

DI: What is "design" for you?

HI : Design is what makes people happy.

DI: What kinds of works do you like designing most?

HI : I like design that is simple and not decorated.

DI: When do you feel the most creative?

HI : When I stand at the planned place and imagine the design in my head, I feel creativity.

DI: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?

HI : What I aspects most in design is the relationship between inside and outside of the building.

DI: What makes a design successful?

HI : To succeed in design, to understand the characteristics of the town, the environment of the land, the client's request in detail.

DI: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?

HI : The relationship between inside and outside of the building.

DI: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?

HI : In Japan, the time from building completion to destruction is very short. It will be about 35 years. I am hoping that the building I designed will remain for a long time. I think that it contributes to the environment and society.

DI: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?

HI : I feel that the design of the world is becoming centralization. However, I feel that Japan has many original designs. I am pleased that Japan's unique sensibility will be disseminated to the world.

DI: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?

HI : My last exhibition was February 25, 2015.

DI: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?

HI : My design inspiration is coming from the uniqueness of the land.

DI: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?

HI : I live in Tokyo, Japan. My design is strongly influenced by the climate of Japan.

DI: What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?

HI : I live in a house I designed. So, it is the house itself.

DI: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?

HI : Please,proceed the way you believe. Surely it will lead you in a good direction.

DI: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?

HI : It is roughly 6 months to 1 year.

DI: What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?

HI : It is the design of the house. Because the project 's demands are different each time.

DI: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?

HI : I develop my designs myself.
