Designer Interview of Beata Greta Szatmari:

DI: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?

BGS : Ever since I was a little girl, I was fascinated by the way clothes were made, it was a question I kept asking myself; I wanted to learn how to turn materials into clothes, so when I turned 24 I decided to seek out the answer and learn this form of art.

DI: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?

BGS : I barely just started out, so I don't have a design studio yet.

DI: What is "design" for you?

BGS : Design for me means wearable art.

DI: What kinds of works do you like designing most?

BGS : Mostly I like designing evening gowns that stand out and are as original as they can be.

DI: What was the first thing you designed for a company?

BGS : Ready Folded-Wearable Art is my first collection, which was also my final project for the design school I studied at.

DI: What is your favorite material / platform / technology?

BGS : 7 My favorite material is lace and I'm fascinated by how it is made.My favorite technology is of course folding fabrics, which inspired my Ready Folded collection.

DI: When do you feel the most creative?

BGS : I feel creative mostly when I am at ease and surrounded by postive energy.

DI: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?

BGS : I focus on the harmony between the different aspects of the design.

DI: What makes a design successful?

BGS : In my opinion creativity and effort make a design successful. The amount of energy you put in your work.

DI: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?

BGS : I judge design based on their harmony. I look at the whole design at first and then look at it's details.

DI: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?

BGS : I draw inspiration from different cultures around the world, so I constantly try to broad my perspective by researching traditional elements.

DI: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?

BGS : I live in Romania, but by heritage I'm Hungarian and of course I attended design school in Hungary. I'm lucky enough to live close to the border, so I can experience both countries. I intend to explore my cultural heritage in my future designs. I would rather not discuss pros and cons, cause sadly there would be too much cons.

DI: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?

BGS : I would tell them to follow their dreams and don't let anybody tell them they can't succeed. Don't doubt yourself.

DI: What is your "golden rule" in design?

BGS : Concentration and persistance.

DI: What skills are most important for a designer?

BGS : Strong drawing skills, visualization abilities and sewing skills, and also a good eye for materials.

DI: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?

BGS : I try to do my designs on my free time.

DI: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?

BGS : That depends on how complicated the design is. A complicated design could take me months, but a simple evening dress a day or a week.

DI: Who are some of your clients?

BGS : My friends and acquaintances.

DI: What are your future plans? What is next for you?

BGS : I plan to open my own studio and start work on my second collection.

DI: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?

BGS : I develop my designs by myself. Hopefully I will have a team around me soon to help my with the process.

DI: Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about?

BGS : I have, but I would like to keep it to myself.

DI: How can people contact you?
