Designer Interview of Misako Niwa:

DI: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?

MN : Because I thought one would like to give delight to a person at designed space from the impression when having made a secondhand apartment over, buying it and having got space on the concerned street.

DI: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?

MN : You can use combination of the texture which feels warmth and the interesting color for the material in present-day various scenes using the Kurume cotton cloth with a splashed pattern which are traditional arts and crafts while enjoying oneself.

DI: What is "design" for you?

MN : Something the life is made abundant in which

DI: What kinds of works do you like designing most?

MN : Something to have functionality and be loved for a long time

DI: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?

MN : Kimono, Kimono sash and homespun cloth

DI: What was the first thing you designed for a company?

MN : Japanese cushion

DI: What is your favorite material / platform / technology?

MN : Cloth, Japanese paper and bamboo

DI: When do you feel the most creative?

MN : Time when mind has gentle plenty of room

DI: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?

MN : The durability, the simple shape and functionality

DI: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?

MN : Mind is gentle.

DI: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?

MN : The feeling of achievement and euphoria

DI: What makes a design successful?

MN : The feeling that I'd like always to offer something appreciated to person's purpose

DI: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?

MN : Convenient good or bad and beauty which harmonizes with daily life

DI: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?

MN : I don't dispose of a thing and tell importance of keeping using it for a long time.

DI: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?

MN : The daily life is made abundant in future with the design, and prompts a person to be conscious and behave.

DI: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?

DI: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?

MN : Enjoyment of a European movie and the interior color used in the movie

DI: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?

MN : Choice and combination with the color of the fabric which was added to the shape and the use refined simply

DI: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?

MN : Event submitting of period limitation

MN : Good of the Japanese traditional arts and crafts

MN : For whom you design is decided and the purpose is made clear.

MN : The morning which cleared up

MN : See something various, and understand what your favorite one is.

DI: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?

MN : To take out originality and to take out the profit as a business

MN : Combination of choice of the material and the color

MN : Curiosity and challenge spirit

MN : The community bass rooted in an area, the supervision which is the interior using traditional arts and crafts

DI: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?

MN : The design is developed by itself.
